Brazil Makes History at the Winter Olympics

Brazil just broke a nearly century-old barrier. Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, men's giant slalom skier, took gold on February 14 at Milan-Cortina 2026 and became the first South American to step on any winter Olympic podium. Just like that, without fanfare: he went down the mountain, set a time, and left the entire continent looking at snow with different eyes.

Jordan Stolz Confirms That U.S. Speed Skating Remains a Gold Machine

The day had more protagonists. Jordan Stolz confirmed that American speed skating remains a gold machine: he dominated the 1,000 meters with an Olympic record (1:06.28) and added another golden medal to the North American sprint collection in Italy. Nothing new under the sun, but Stolz made it look easy.

Skeleton: Triple British Day and Austrian Veteran

Great Britain owned the day in skeleton. Matt Weston won the first men's Olympic gold in the discipline for his country, while teammate Tabitha Stoecker claimed mixed gold alongside him. To top it off, Austrian Laura Flock won her first women's gold at age 36. Three gold medals in a single day for skeleton, three different stories.

But not everything was glory. Ukrainian Vladyslav Heraskevych was disqualified for wearing a "souvenir helmet" during the ceremony with President Zelenskiy. Olympic authorities cited violation of political protocols in competition. The controversy is served: some see it as a legitimate symbolic gesture; others, as a breach of IOC neutral rules. Heraskevych has not made official public statements thus far.

The bottom line: Milan-Cortina 2026 kicked off with records, first-evers, and controversy. Same as always, but with snow.
