Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Yoshi finally has a voice. And it's Donald Glover.

Yoshi has been one of the most beloved characters in the Nintendo universe for over thirty years. He had never really spoken. On March 9, 2026, that changed: Donald Glover, the same one from Atlanta, the same one from Community, the same one who released records as Childish Gambino, is the voice of the green dinosaur in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Nintendo and Illumination revealed it in the film's final trailer during a Nintendo Direct dedicated exclusively to the movie, less than twenty-four hours before MAR10 Day.

The reveal was the most talked-about moment of the Direct. Until then, the identity of the actor behind Yoshi was the main mystery in the cast. Nintendo and Illumination had confirmed nearly every other member of the ensemble over the previous months: Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Brie Larson as Rosalina, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Yoshi was the gap. And they filled it with someone who appeared on no reasonable prediction list.

Glover is not just a high-profile actor: he is a complete creative with wide-ranging cultural credibility. That someone with that level of symbolic capital wants to voice a green dinosaur who until now only made sound-design noises is a fairly clear measure of the weight that Nintendo's film franchise has acquired in less than three years.

The trailer also confirmed Luis Guzmán as Wart, the amphibian villain pulled directly from the Super Mario Bros. 2 catalog, a character who had gone decades without any significant appearance, and Issa Rae as the Honey Queen, ruler of the Honeyhive Galaxy. Rounding out the cast, Juliet Jelenic, daughter of co-director Michael Jelenic, returns as Lumalee: the nihilistic Luma who in the first movie was Bowser's prisoner and who now, according to the trailer, works as a prison guard. An arc that the fandom received with disproportionate enthusiasm in 2023 and that Nintendo clearly decided not to waste.

The plot of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie starts with Peach's birthday and escalates quickly: the castle is lifted into space by Bowser Jr., who acts as the main antagonist while his father remains imprisoned. Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi, newly joined to the group, follow Peach and Toad across galaxies to stop the Koopa heir's ambitions and rescue Rosalina. The trailer shows the direct visual influence of the 2007 game: inverted gravity, traversable spherical planets, observatories in the stellar void.

The music also returns to the original material. Brian Tyler, who composed the first film's score, leads an orchestra of seventy musicians here with reworked themes from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. The animation, again handled by Illumination Studios Paris, wrapped production in November 2025, with post-production completed in January 2026 according to Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri.

The commercial bar to clear is not a small one.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie of 2023 grossed $1.36 billion worldwide, becoming the third highest-grossing animated film in history. Only Barbie surpassed it that year in the overall box office, and in animation specifically you need to go back to titles the size of The Lion King or Incredibles 2 to find comparables. The bar is not just high: it is in the stratosphere.

The release strategy reflects that: US premiere on April 1, 2026, spring school holiday season, the same calendar that worked for the first film, in IMAX and RealD 3D formats. Japan receives the film on April 24. Tickets are already on sale across the United States.

That Nintendo chose March 10, the date where the calendar turns "MAR10" into the plumber's name, to concentrate this level of announcements is not a scheduling coincidence. It is brand policy.

All coordinated. All on the same day. The architecture of a cinematic universe that Nintendo is building with a patience that traditional Hollywood studios have spent years trying to replicate without success.

The film's post-credits scene, according to Wikipedia previewing information from the production material itself, points toward a Yoshi-centered film. Which means the decision to cast Donald Glover was not just for this movie.

There is something structurally revealing in what Nintendo is doing. Disney built its animation hegemony over decades of accumulated intellectual properties and iron control of its distribution. Nintendo has a single film franchise, two movies, and is already operating with the logic of a top-tier studio: recurring directors, fixed screenwriters, in-house composers, returning cast, new characters pointing toward spin-offs.

Additionally, GameSpot confirmed that Nintendo has a live-action Legend of Zelda film in development with Sony Pictures, scheduled for 2027. The plan is not just to make Mario movies: it is to turn Nintendo's catalog into a permanent cinematic pipeline.
